Paramaribo en omgeving dat al decennialang het leven van de bewoners sterk beïnvloedt. De afgelopen jaren zijn er veel periodes geweest waarin extreme regenval heeft geleid tot
ernstige wateroverlast. Deze overstromingen hebben grote economische, materiele en
sociale gevolgen.
Groot-Paramaribo watert via een netwerk van open kanalen en gesloten leidingen met pompstations en spuisluizen af op de Suriname rivier, de Saramacca rivier, en de Atlantische Oceaan. Het gebied is opgedeeld in grotere en kleinere afwateringsgebieden die deels gekoppeld zijn.

The Republic of Suriname has received a loan from the World Bank towards the Saramacca Canal System Rehabilitation Project, and intends to apply part of the proceeds toward payments under the contract for the Design and detailed engineering, Environmental and Social studies, Bidding documents and Procurement support of a pumping station at Uitkijk, Saramacca.
