ABOUT

The Government of Suriname (GoS) is implementing a project financed by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development for the Saramacca Canal System Rehabilitation Project in the amount of US$35 million.

The project will finance four components:

 
  • Component 1 – Improving the Drainage Infrastructure;
  • Component 2 – Strengthening the Saramacca Canal Water Management System;
  • Component 3 – Providing a Contingent Emergency Response;
  • Component 4 – Supporting the Project Management and Implementation Support.

Paramaribo, situated on a low-lying coastal plain near the Suriname River, experiences frequent flooding due to heavy rainfall and insufficient drainage. Coastal flooding, exacerbated by high tides and strong winds, is also on the rise. As the city expanded, its original agricultural canal network struggled to accommodate urban demands, leading to localized flooding that lingers for weeks. Greater Paramaribo relies heavily on an extensive canal system for stormwater drainage, directed towards the historic Saramacca Canal and the ocean. To address this pressing issue, the Saramacca Canal System Rehabilitation Project seeks to revitalize and modernize the canal infrastructure. By implementing innovative drainage solutions and optimizing the existing system, the project aims to mitigate flood risks, enhance resilience, and ensure a safer and sustainable future for Paramaribo and its surrounding areas.
